Race Reports
Race Report - Sun 26th Dec '11 - The Disappearing Buoy
In perfect conditions with relatively calm sea and a breeze 0f 14 gusting 20 knots from the south West. 5 of the 10 yachts had opted for white sail racing something to do with the delicate heads from Christmas Day.
The Outfall buoy had gone missing earlier the previous week so the race was a start from an imaginary line between SWM and Green Buoy to the north. The start was hotly contested by Donatello and Leopard with a lot of shouting at the Green buoy biased end but everyone luckily behind the line. Donatello made the early running in gusty conditions. With a strong spring tide flooding we were somewhat surprised to see Freyr out at the other end on her own in the strong tide.
Most boats battled up the beat inshore tacking to take advantage of the weaker tide and Leopard was clear ahead as we reached Eastbourne pier followed by Donatello and Captain Fantastic. The lone figure on Leopard looked like Jack in Titanic searching for Premier Buoy. Alas she had disappeared and so the Race Officer suggested we all round the imaginary buoy and head back to the finishing line.
The imaginary buoy caused some confusion to those with different GPS systems as there were yachts rounding it at different positions up the beat and back at the bar the talk was how far some had gone and others had not! Some had even rounded it to starboard rather than port. However in the festive spirit all 10 yachts found it in their own minds and then travelled dead down wind in 22knots of a rising breeze. Spinnakers were flown by Donatello, Captain Fantastic, Incognito, Ascent and Pingu there were broaches and wineglasses seen as the wind picked up.
Eventually all the boats finished the course, came into the lock, and were offered a little tipple at the RNLI office which was gratefully received.
The race was won by Act of Defiance with only three on board.
Race Report - Sun 6th Nov '11 - Race 7 PY
Two boats out with Pleiades and Incognito challenging for the honours. Pleiades beating Incognito by 21 seconds on corrected time, having assisted the MOB incident.
Race Report - Sun 6th Nov '11 - Race 7 IRC
Northerly winds and cooler conditions met the SHYC Race Fleet this week. Tim Jermyn Race officer set a great course given the 16-22 knots of North Easterly that saw a few more woolly hats out than normally. The course set was SWM Outfall Sovereign Tower SWM and Finish. A great course given the wind conditions.
It was great to see Etoile back in the IRC fleet having just cruised round the UK for the last 6 months. However she was sailing light today with just Stephanie, Ian, and the dog Zilla.
The Start saw a split with some inshore which was the favoured end of the line. Bojangles was last off the line. First to the mark was Captain Fantastic followed closely by Kratos and Feeling Rough. The Spinnakers all flew for the next downwind leg but is was all about the choice of sail as the following leg was a very tight spinnaker reach to Royal Sovereign Tower and saw broaches from most of the fleet. Leopard struggled with Wine Glasses and Feeling Rough sailing a perfect downwind leg however it was Bojangles that roared away split the fleet and was first round the Tower followed by Captain Fantastic and Kratos.
The beat that followed was very long and the wind was blowing 18-22 knots but shifting all the way back. Leopard, Freyr and Roxanne moved through the fleet and challenged as they approached the windward mark. A commercial tug split the fleet and Man Over Board on Feeling Rough was seen out by the Tower with Pleiades assisting. A shuffling of positions Captain Fantastic just got round the windward mark 10 boat lengths ahead of Bojangles and finished in the same position.

Nautical Sayings: ''Grog / Groggy''
In the 18th century Royal Navy Admiral Vernons nickname was 'Old Grogram'. We're not sure why but it was he who decided that the sailors daily ration of a tot (or pint) of rum should be watered down. This was not very popular and sailors would pull all sorts of tricks to gain more rum. Those who were successful would reap the rewards of their endeavours by feeling ill or Groggy the next day.

Old PC Request
Not a plea for an elderly police constable, but for a replacement computer for our office.
The current one was donated by Chris Jeffries over 5 years ago and has given great service, but it is coming to the end of its days and needs replacing. We have just replaced the monitor, but require a new base unit. If anyone can help, please contact us.
