FAQs
Q. How long does it take in the lock?
A. On average a lock in or out takes about 20 minutes. However, it depends upon the state of the tide, level of traffic and the efficiency of boat owners tying up. We run a queuing system at peak times. We advise people to put their VHF radio on and if they hear a lot of traffic, log themselves into the queue nice and early.
Q. When the lock is busy; do you expect me to raft alongside other boats?
A. Yes. Be prepared for the packer at the head of the lock to ask you to do this. Always remember to put out fenders both sides.
Q. What is free flow and when does it operate?
A. Free flow means both sets of lock gates are open - indicated by a flashing orange light. This can only happen when the tide reaches the same level as the marina basin. Free flow is only possible during spring tides. The length of time can vary from 40 minutes to around four-and-a-half hours.
Q. How do we find you?
A. Comprehensive directions are on the Premier Marinas website, or you may wish to consult page 10 of the Port Solent Marina Guide.
Q What are we able and not able to do in Portsmouth Harbour, given that it is a naval base?
A There are comprehensive guidelines on the Queen's Harbourmasters website, but the general rule is keep clear of ships and avoid close quarters encounters. www.qhmportsmouth.com has full details.
Q. What is the minimum dredged depth?
A. We dredge to minus 1.5m chart datum. This means most boats, most of the time, can come and go without too much difficulty.
Q. Are there any weather conditions to be aware of on the approach to the marina?
A. Being at the top of Portsmouth Harbour means the wind and wave conditions do not tend to affect us too badly. In a strong northerly breeze, there can be some deflection of the wind around the lock entrance where extra care is advisable.
Q. If I need to get work done on my boat, are there people on site who can help me?
A. The marina caters for all your boating needs - with the added attractions of a boat shed, and 22 ton boat mover, The Port Solent Marine Superstore is the UK's biggest one-stop chandlery. For a full list of marine businesses and services at Port Solent Marina, visit our business directiory.
