Buying New or Second-hand

Buying new gives the reassurance of a full warranty, but new boats depreciate the minute they leave the showroom. However finance terms, interest rates and down-payments may be far more attractive than when buying second-hand.

Second-hand boats usually come with more equipment - perhaps a different wardrobe of sails, with extras such as life-rafts etc, and will generally cost less. But there may be added expenses in repairs and upgrades.

Decide upon the type of boating you will be doing, the number of berths you need, and the type of water you will be on. Consider the running costs.

Boat shows are a good hunting ground to contrast and compare a variety of models. Snap up bargains by looking at the end of the model year, usually July, when the old models are cheaper. Check the classifieds and websites.

When you decide upon a boat, have a mechanic check the engine and check the seller's proof of ownership. If buying second-hand, you may choose to have the boat lifted to inspect the hull.
