Technical Specification

Elan 450

Designed by Rob Humphreys, the new Elan 450 sets new standards in design and short handed sailing in its class.

The elegant Elan 450 builds on the success of the Elan performance cruiser range including features such as an open transom, flush hatches on coach roof, open bow pulpit, clean lines on deck, long length at waterline, pure bow lines as well as a bright, contemporary and spacious interior.

The Elan 450 is offered with a three cabin layout which includes a luxurious owners forecabin with a large island double cabin and generous heads compartment that features a separate shower cubicle. The aft of the Elan 450 comprises of two large double cabins that mirror one another on port and starboard, offering very comfortable accommodation for guests and crew alike.

For those with a larger crew, a four cabin layout is also available. The fourth cabin is on the starboard side and comprises two generous bunk beds.

The bright and airy saloon with a 'U' shaped settee and large folding saloon table, offers plenty of space for an evening aboard. The saloon also features a practical chart table arrangement with a wet locker behind. The adjoining second heads complete the saloon area.

A fully equipped 'L' shaped galley fulfils even the toughest chef's demands, with its modern storage solutions, front opening fridge and hard wearing finish. This galley will stand the test of time.

The most impressive thing about the Elan 450 is her sailing ability. Elan Yachts have established themselves as European Award Winning boat builders with a pedigree for producing fast paced, quality yachts.

The Elan 450's impressive sail plan with tall fractional rig, swept aft double spreaders, large mainsail area, non overlapping headsail and large gennaker, handled by her carbon retractable bow spirit, maximises her sailing performance - taking full advantage of the precise combination of her fin lead keel and twin rudder steering system.

The Elan 450's ergonomic cockpit is an evolution of the highly successful Elan 410. Designed with ease of movement in mind, the cockpit's generous width offers either the racing crew or guests looking to relax, the space they need.

Twin steering wheels, mainsheet traveller mounted on the cockpit floor, 3 pairs of powerful Harken winches and a German mainsheet system all make for good results on the race course or fast passage making.

The Elan 450's cockpit is not just about performance but also relaxation and comfort. A cockpit table can be stored in a dedicated space under the cockpit floor, a recessed space for storage of the spray hood, large cockpit lockers as well as dedicated life raft storage all help make up this complete performance cruiser.

The deck is foremost designed for efficient sailing and safety of the crew. The head sail furling gear as standard is recessed below the deck while the anchor is located in a swivelling stem head fitting also stored under the deck.

One of the keys to the control and performance offered by the Elan 450 is the twin rudder arrangement. This tried and tested set up has been proven by much larger yachts such as the Open 60 class and more recently Rob Humphreys Volvo 70 design for Team Russia.

The main benefit of twin rudders is the greater directional control, allowing for much easier handling in tough sailing conditions. This comes from the fact that the rudders immerse further with heel; resulting in higher levels of rudder control as the angle of heel increases.

When sailing, the leeward rudder will always be in its most efficient position whilst the windward rudder will be creating very little or no drag. The simple result of this is outstanding performance and control.

The fast paced Elan 450 can be optimised beyond its standard specification with the Elan Club Race Pack which comprises of the a Selden Performance Mast, Rod rigging, Dyneema running rigging and upgraded winches.

But for those looking for the ultimate specification, then the Elan Grand Prix pack would be the only choice with its Selden Carbon Mast, Rod rigging, Dyneema running rigging and upgraded winches.
