Gosport Berth Holders Take On 'Boat Around Britain' Challenge
Gosport Marina berth holder Phil Davies and lifelong friend Nigel Boutwood have embarked on a gruelling journey around the UK on behalf of their two chosen charities; Charlie’s Challenge Raising Funds for Brain Tumour Research and Prostate Cancer UK. Nigel’s son Charlie, to whom Phil is godfather, survived a brain tumour as an 18 month old child, and the charity is something incredibly close to their hearts, aiming to help others in a similar situation and give them the best possible chance to survive.
Their plan is to circumnavigate (anti-clockwise) the Island of Great Britain in Phil’s Rhea 850 Timonier named ‘Start Me Up’. Start Me Up is 8.5m long, has 4 berths and reaches speeds of up to 28 knots whilst offering excellent passage in choppy seas!
Phil and Nigel’s journey began on Friday 17th May 2019 from Gosport Marina, with their first leg of the journey taking them to Premier’s Eastbourne Marina. From here they made their way around to Ramsgate and along the east coast via Lowestoft, Grimsby and Sunderland. The next part of their challenge was to round the coast of Scotland, which the pair has said was the most challenging part of their journey to date with the inconsistent weather in June providing a stern test for both boat and crew.
Their route then headed down to Ireland taking a 10 day break at Bangor Marina then heading down the East Coast of Ireland before tackling the Irish Sea and then the Bristol Channel. They have recently rounded Lands’ End and headed to port at Falmouth Marina from where they will set off on the home straight to the South Coast and back to Gosport Marina.
