The far end of the North Harbour is used seasonally by a number of authorised organisations for the purposes of youth sail training, RYA instruction and SCUBA.
In the interests of maintaining safe separation from vessel movements and these activities a restricted access area has been established.

The area is marked with 6x red buffs in a line from position:
50°47.839’N, 000°19.984’E to 50°47.927’N 000°.19.907E’.

No vessel, including those listed as approved organisations are to enter the Restricted Access Area without specific authorisation from the Lock Keeper:

  • Sea Training Sussex - Power boat training - RYA
  • Buzz Active - Power boat training - RYA
  • Eastbourne Sea Cadets - Power boat, dinghy sailing, kayak and rowing training -  Safety boat always in attendance, “Sea Cadet Safety” VHF17
  • Planet Divers - Instructor lead SCUBA - Via RIB only, flag Alpha to be displayed
  • Sovereign Divers - Instructor lead SCUBA - Via RIB only, flag Alpha to be displayed
  • Eastbourne MVS - Power boat training - East Sussex 1 and RIB
  • Bourne to Sail - Boat handling - RYA

1. Approved organisations are to contact the Lock Keeper to request permission to operate within the Restricted Access Area. Approval will be given providing that no other approved activity is already taking place.

2. Anyone else wishing to use the Restricted Access Area must also contact the Duty Lock Keeper to request permission. Sea trials, calibration of equipment, engine tests and similar requests will not unreasonably be declined unless an approved organisation is operating at that time.

3. In all cases:

  • Please provide the Lock Keeper with a likely finish time and the activity being undertaken
  • Maintain a listening watch on VHF Ch17
  • Keep below the 5knt speed limit at all times, no wake
  • Maintain a good lookout
  • Inform the Lock Keeper once you have left the Restricted Access Area

4. Approved Organisations have submitted Risk Assessments applicable to their activity and governing body rules. As part of the Harbour’s Safety Management System, control over the access and use of the Restricted Access Area is required to maintain safety. The Lock Keepers Decision therefore must be respected.
