Gosport Marina Represented In Iconic Race

The 2021 Round the Island Race went ahead earlier this month, with staff and berth holders from Gosport Marina taking to the water to participate in the event.
The annual Round the Island Race, organised by the Island Sailing Club, is a one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight and is one of the largest yacht races in the world. Many Premier berth holders participated in this year’s event including a team on the Spirit 111, GEIST - a 34m all wooden sloop, launched in 2020 and berthed in Gosport’s Endeavour Quay this summer. On that team was none other than Endeavour Quay’s Boatyard Manager Tim Newell, who was invited to join the race crew on board GEIST.

Tim comments: “After 16 months of lockdown and limited racing opportunities for the 1100 competing yachts, taking to the start line felt like a momentous occasion. GEIST is a beautiful yacht to sail, and in every sense, a magnificent work of art. I feel very lucky to have had that experience.

“After a slow start with the rest of the fleet, the breeze arrived at Newtown creek and allowed a gentle beat up to the Needles, by which point we were up with the leaders. We had a fairly straightforward downwind leg at the back of the island that allowed us to fly the huge asymmetric sails and make up a handful of places, eventually crossing the finish line at 1330 in 10th place on the water, 31st in class!”

A big congratulations to Tim, the full GEIST crew and all Premier berth holders and visitors who took place in the Round the Island Race this year.
