Haslar Marina is home to a number of fascinating and historic vessels.
The Offshore Cruising Club’s vessel Overlord is a magnificent 10-berth, 58 foot Bermudan sloop, built in 1936 and based in Haslar Marina. Currently on a 12-week cruise around Southern Ireland, on return in September, Overlord is back to training and weekend sails and will be running a number of open days and trail sail sessions.
Another season is well underway for The Boleh Trust, with already many days sailed for beneficiaries of the charity. Boleh was built in 1949 as an intriguing blend of Malaysian and British shipbuilding techniques, now with hybrid electric auxiliary propulsion, updated to meet modern regulations, and staffed by an enthusiastic team of volunteers. HMS Medusa is a small warship built in 1943 and the last of the 464 vessels built that is in original and operational condition. She is the only Royal Navy fighting vessel in the UK from WW2 that is in original and seaworthy condition. As navigational leader for Omaha beach on D-Day, she took the surrender of part of Holland at the end of the war. She is owned by The Medusa Trust and looked after and operated by volunteers, who work with cadets and veterans as well as attending events along the South Coast, France and the Channel islands.
In July, Portsmouth Harbour saw the highly anticipated return of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race fleet following an unforgettable 11-months circumnavigation.
Gosport Marina proudly serves as the technical hub and training headquarters for Clipper Ventures, where their fleet of 70-foot ocean-racing yachts is berthed, refitted, and rigorously maintained between the 40,000-nautical-mile circumnavigations and where participating sailor’s complete four intense weeks of mandatory Solent training before taking on the world's toughest oceans.
The first of the new fourth generation ocean racing yachts, Clipper RX, has now arrived at Gosport’s Endeavour Quay Boatyard, where the full fleet will be replaced by the new Clipper RX and lifted for maintenance.
