Engine Care Taster Workshops
Premier Marinas Swanwick has teamed up with onsite Premier Marine Insurance providers, GJW Direct to hold a series of engine care taster workshops. The workshops will be offered at £5 per head with all proceeds going to the RNLI. The taster sessions are designed to provide a practical update of skills rather than a formal qualification and will cover a range of topics from basic maintenance and engine care through to trouble shooting out on the water.
Ideal for sailing or motor boating enthusiasts, inboard or outboard, petrol or diesel engines, you’ll learn the basics of what to do to prepare your engine for winter, simple day to day care tips and key strategies to try in the event of a breakdown at sea. The workshops will be delivered by Jonathan Parker from Parker Marine Services Limited. An RYA Diesel Engine Course Instructor, Jonathan has 20 years’ of practical experience having worked on all types of engines and attended over 3500 on water breakdowns in his career.
Jonathan advises that most engine problems can be avoided by taking simple precautions and good routine care will extend the life of an engine.
The 2 hour workshops will be held at GJW’s new offices (Unit 19 Swanwick Marina Boatyard) on Saturday 2nd March (two time slots, 10.00 – 12.00/13.30 - 15.30).
The sessions will cover topics such as engine instrumentation, common types of breakdown, plus the following:
• Top tips to ensure a reliable engine - inboard or outboard
• Importance of annual services and checks
• Pre-season checks
• The on-board ‘First Aid Kit’ of spares
• Trouble shooting on the water
There will also be a Q&A session providing an opportunity for owners to ask additional questions about their particular engine. At the close GJW Direct will introduce attendees to the company’s latest online initiative, MyBoat – a free to use digital organiser which can be set up with personalised alerts to ensure boat owners keep on top of boat maintenance. From creating online profiles for multiple vessels and calculating running costs for each of these vessels to using a 5-day weather and tide forecast to help plan trips.
Open to both Premier berth holders and visitors, these taster workshops can be a stepping stone to a full day RYA Diesel Engine Course led by Jonathan Parker and hosted by Urban Truant, RYA Training Centre, who will be offering berth holders a 10% reduction when registering on to the full course.
