PSYC Winter Talks Schedule

Date:

Port Solent Club will be hosting its three annual winter meets at the Port House on Sundays in Jan, Feb and March.  These meetings, which are open to non-members, feature guest speakers of interest to all boaters.

On Sunday 20th January from 11am, Port Solent Yacht Club will be hosting its first winter meet and inviting former Royal Marines Commando, Lance Shepherd, to talk about his recent experiences in the Clipper Round The World Race, and recount the highs & lows of this epic race from a skipper’s perspective.

On Sunday 17th February from 11am, Port Solent Yacht Club will be hosting its second winter meet when Port Solent resident, Mike Austin, will talk about his participation in the BT Global Challenge which raced around the world against the wind and currents - in other words, the wrong way!  Mike was aboard "Time and Tide" with a crew entirely composed of those who were disabled or had survived a life threatening illness, racing against the other normally crewed yachts "On Equal Terms" - the name of their book. On the Cape Horn leg, three of them were cancer survivors including their medic, also a Macmillan Nurse, who had completed a trauma course ahead of the race. She was kept very busy due to the nature of the crew and when one crew-member, an amputee, broke his only leg and was strapped below for 15 days."

On Sunday 17th March from 11am, Port Solent Yacht Club will be hosting its third winter meet and inviting RYA Instructor, author of sailing books, and a feature writer for yachting magazines, Duncan Wells, to give a talk on handling techniques for single and short-handed crews of both sailing and motor yachts as well as covering stress free navigation; electronic and traditional.

Non-members are welcome to attend, free of charge, however if they would like to stay on for Sunday Lunch they must inform The Port House by emailing Nikki@vanillacatering.co.uk.

Premier Port Solent would also like to wish Mike Austin well in his new role as he takes the helm as Commodore of Port Solent Yacht Club in the New Year. For more information on how to become a member of the yacht club visit the club's website
