Exciting Times Ahead for Nomad Sailing
Following the recent acquisition of Solent Yacht Charter, onsite tenants Nomad Sailing are delighted to be able to offer a full charter management service at Gosport Marina. We spoke to Jim Barden, who owns and runs Nomad Sailing with his sister Lou, to find out more about the new services on offer and future plans for the company.
Nomad’s acquisition of Solent Yacht Charter…
We were presented with the opportunity to acquire Solent Yacht Charter by the previous owners in 2019 and officially took over in November. As a business it is a great fit for what we do at Nomad Sailing and also allows us to offer a bareboat charter option to our students who have qualified and trained with Nomad.
The benefits and logistics of Charter Management…
Solent Yacht Charter gives us the opportunity to market the charter/rental of a boat on the owner’s behalf, around whatever availability they decide their boat is not in use. After ten years in the industry, we know as boat owners this is an expensive and profitable business!
We take care of all administration of the charter, including contacting the customers, arranging the handovers and handbacks and making sure the boat is refuelled, rewatered and fully cleaned between each charter or for the owner’s personal use. It is our responsibility to ensure the charter management fits completely around the boat owner and their availability and, depending on the contract, the owner’s will receive around 50% of the charter fee received. The owner is only responsible for the usual fees and maintenance of owning a boat, including the costs of berthing at the home marina, annual servicing and boat insurance. We take care of everything else.
Nomad Sailing with Solent Yacht Charter offer customers four main services:
- RYA Training Centre – with multiple shore-based classrooms across the South East and London, we offer a range of practical sail training and shorebased theory and practical courses covering sail and motor.
- Bareboat and Skippered Yacht Charter – with a fleet of various types and size of boats, we offer customers a range of charter experiences, as well as providing cruising advice and technical support on hand.
- Skippered Motor Boat Packages – we offer a selection of package charter experiences including day charters customised to the customer’s specifications. A popular package involves 4-12 people on a fast cruise to a local Solent spot for a picnic lunch and a swim or a waterside restaurant of their choice
- Charter Management – 80% of our charter fleet are privately own yachts which we manage and rent out on behalf of their owner.
Plans for the future…
We are continuously working on getting bigger and better, whilst still ensuring our customers know they are dealing with a small team that knows them and their needs. We see some real opportunities that we can organise with the two companies together including fun regattas, skipper or led flotillas, bespoke navigation and offering more of our popular Skippered Motor Boat Charter experiences for special occasions and entertaining, expanding on new locations for our day cruises. A long term goal is to increase the size of our fleet, not just in number but also in type and size, to make sure we can offer a boat to suit all needs.
A personal message from Jim…
We are keen to keep expanding both Nomad Sailing and Solent Yacht Charter and have more boats and experiences available to offer our customers. If you have a boat or are thinking of buying a boat, we would love to hear from anyone interested in using our charter management or any of our services! There is always one of us around at Endeavour Quay, either down at the pontoons or up in our office – feel free to say hello and have a chat to myself, Lou or Joe.
