Lock Shutdown & Modernisation
The marina lock was constructed in 1964, and whilst it has been carefully maintained since, it now requires modernisation to ensure that it is efficient, reliable and fit for the future. The timetable and programme for the shutdown and modernisation works is detailed below:
Chichester Marina’s lock will close on Thursday 6th February 2020 and reopen on Thursday 12th March with a contingency overrun until 20th March for unforeseen works or delays, such as adverse weather; this means that the lock will be closed for 5 to 6 weeks.
The shutdown will facilitate maintenance and modernisation works requiring an investment of circ £400,000 - but the true extent of the modernisation required will become clear once the work is underway and the inner workings of the lock are revealed.
The scheduled work includes standard maintenance; repair to the recently damaged gates after a boat struck them; replacement of the inner/outer gate bearings; rebuild of the lock’s gearbox and supporting steel work; lock rewiring and installation of a new lock control system.
We have chosen a winter shutdown because most boats are either ashore or not in use but if you regularly use your boat in the winter months we ask that you contact reception to discuss potential berthing options.
We thank you in anticipation of your understanding and patience whilst we carry out these vital works and apologise for any inconvenience the shutdown may cause.
